Azafran origen La Mancha | imagen Rosa del Azafran | Molido Hebras Azafran La FlorThe Spain's origin saffron or Crocus sativus comes from the plant of the same name belonging to the family Iridaceae. Morphologically as shown rhizome tuber, linear leaves, perigonio three external and three internal divisions slightly lower, three stamens, ovary triangular, style filiform, stigma orange, divided into three parts hanging box with many seeds membranous. The stigmas contain a volatile oil palatable and intense yellow color.

For the saffron is necessary to remove the stigma of the flower. It usually takes about 4.000 to get 50 grams. of saffron in threads, but such is the strength of dye that a part of it dissolved in 100.000 liters of water produces a clear yellow dye.

The plant supports the temperature variations, but the soil must be well drained (to dispose of dead water and excessive moisture from ground through pipes and ditches) so that the bulbs do not rot.

It is planted from May to June and it is in October when it gives the first flowering, to be repeated during 3 or 4 años.
